Tony Finau made a shooting change this week!
After playing a PING PLD Custom Ally Blue Onset 5, he switched to a PING Scottsdale TEC Ally Blue Onset. There were some quick changes in performance.
IN Pebble beachFinau finished the week ranked No. 1 in Strokes Gained: Placing at +8,255. For a player whose numbers have lagged behind the rest of his game, this could be a turning point.

Statistics that have hindered him
In 2024, Finau was elite in green:
- 10 in SG: Total
- 2 in SG: Access
- 12 in SG: Around the Green
But he ranked 156 in SG: Placementmissing more than 21 shots on the green for the season.
In 2025, the pattern did not change. His batted ball cooled a bit, but still ranking 124 (-7.280). The shots per round hovered around 29 and the three-point percentage was higher than he would have liked. In relation to the rest of his game, shooting has clearly been the weakest category over the past two seasons.
What’s different about starting Ally Blue
of PING Ally Blue Start features the original design which places the shaft entry point far behind the face rather than in front. This changes the look of the address and slightly changes the way the head wants to rotate.
It is not a zero torque design. The shaft enters off-center, creating approximately 15 degrees of toe sag. This means that the shooter still suits a player with a bow in the shot.
A week or so to come?
Finau has been loyal to PING PLD Anser-style prototypes dating back to 2021.
One strong week doesn’t erase two seasons of records. When a player gains more than eight strokes in a week because he changes his shot, it’s worth paying attention.
