Lecce secured a vital 2-0 win at the Unipol Domus against Cagliari at the Unipol Domus, with goals from Omri Gandelman and Ylber Ramadani in the second half.
This Serie A clash carried significant weight for both sides. Cagliari, 13th in the table with 28 points, sought to consolidate their position in mid-table. However, Lecce, 17th with 21 points, were desperate for points to move away from the relegation zone. Recent form has seen Cagliari in better form, having won three of their last five league games.
The first half developed with CÃ ller dominating possession, controlling 59% of the ball. They tried to impose their game on the visitors, circulating passes through the middle of the field. Despite their control, clear scoring opportunities were few and far between. Cagliari had 8 shots on target and 8 corners, but their efforts were not accurate.
Lecce, meanwhile, took a more cautious approach. They focused on defensive solidity, absorbing Cagliari’s pressure effectively. Their game plan was to frustrate the locals and look for opportunities on the counter-attack. Defensive discipline kept the scores level at half-time.
As the teams headed to the dressing rooms, Cagliari knew they needed to find a cutting edge. Their dominance of possession had resulted in no shots on target, a frustrating statistic. Lecce, on the other hand, would have been satisfied with their defensive display, but needed to create more offensive threats.
The Cagliari manager responded with tactical changes early in the second half. In the 57th minute, Leonardo Pavoletti and Gabriele Zappa entered the fray hoping to inject more urgency into the attack. These substitutions were intended to break the deadlock and ignite the local crowd.
However, it was Lecce who struck first. In the 65th minute, Omri Gandelman broke the deadlock. Riccardo Sottil made a precise assist, allowing Gandelman to find space and drill through the Cagliari goalkeeper. The goal came against the run of play in terms of possession, but it showed Lecce’s efficiency.
Lecce then doubled their lead in the 76th minute and strengthened their control of the game. Ylber Ramadani scored a crucial second goal, assisted by Lassana Coulibaly. Coulibaly’s clever pass found Ramadani, who calmly slotted the ball home. This second goal deflated the locals and consolidated Lecce’s advantage.
The statistics painted a clear picture of Lecce’s clinical performance. They converted two of their four shots on goal, achieving an Expected Goals (xG) of 1.35. In contrast, Cagliari, despite 59% possession and 11 total shots, registered 0 shots on goal with an xG of 1.01. Lecce’s defense held firm, ensuring goalkeeper Wladimiro Falcone had no saves to make.
This crucial 2-0 win gives Lecce a much-needed boost in their fight for Serie A survival, bringing them closer to safety. For Cagliari, this defeat at home is a major setback, highlighting the problems with their penetration and consistency in attack. They will need to regroup quickly to avoid sliding further down the table.
