Donyell Malen’s clinical brace was not enough as Napoli twice fought back for a dramatic 2-2 draw against AS Roma at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium.
Napoli and AS Roma played out a thrilling 2-2 draw on 15 February 2026. The high-stakes Serie A encounter saw both teams fiercely battle for crucial points in their quest for European football.
This highly anticipated Derby del Sole pitted third-placed Napoli against fourth-placed AS Roma. Napoli went into the game with 49 points, while Roma were close behind with 46 points, making this a key point for both teams’ league ambitions.
AS Roma started strongly and stunned the home crowd with an opening goal in the 7th minute. Donyell Malen superbly guided a pinpoint pass from Bryan Zaragoza to put the visitors ahead. Napoli worked to respond, but a yellow card for Gianluca Mancini in the 26th minute showed their frustration.
Despite Napoli’s efforts to control possession, Roma’s counter-attacking threat remained. Shortly before the break, in the 40th minute, Leonardo Spinazzola equalized for Napoli. He slotted home an assist from Elif Elmas, sending the teams into the break tied.
At the break, Napoli needed to convert their possession into more clear chances. Roma, meanwhile, sought to exploit their clinical advantage despite less ball control. The second part promised more drama.
In the second half there were substitutions, as both technicians were looking for an advantage. Bryan Zaragoza was replaced by MatÃas Soulé for Roma immediately after the restart. The match turned into a tactical battle.
The controversy arose in the 69th minute when Amir Rrahmani received a yellow card for a foul in the area. Donyell Malen stepped up to convert the resulting penalty for Roma in the 71st minute, regaining their lead. Napoli responded with substitutions of their own.
Napoli pushed hard for another draw, making further changes to their line-up. His persistence paid off in the 82nd minute when substitute Alisson Santos found the back of the net. Giovane assisted Santos and tied the score again.
Despite Napoli’s 61% ball possession and 11 shots in total, only 7 were on target. AS Roma, with just 39% possession, managed 9 shots, but critically, their 2 shots on goal resulted in goals. Roma’s impressive xG of 1.7 compared to Napoli’s 0.58 highlighted their clinical finishing.
The 2-2 draw keeps Napoli in third position with 50 points, while AS Roma remains fourth with 47 points. Both teams will reflect on a game that saw them take the lead and lose it, leaving them three points apart in the Serie A standings.
