“However, I will still fight him,” Davis said. “It just has to make sense. And what people don’t realize is my first homecoming, you must have forgotten, but we reached out to Andy Cruz.”
Davis said he tried to secure the fight before his November 2024 bout against Gustavo Lemos by contacting Cruz’s promoter Eddie Hearn directly.
“My very first homecoming, before I was about to fight Gustavo Lemos, I reached out to Andy Cruz,” Davis said. “I reached out to Eddie Hearn and he said, no, he doesn’t want to fight right now. It’s a little premature.”
He added that he wanted recognition for the game early in his professional career.
“I already reached out to him, and then I found Lemos,” Davis said. “So, I wish people would give me credit for that. I actually tried to fight this guy the very first time I had a chance to ask for an opponent.”
Davis is coming off a stoppage win over Jamaine Ortiz in his debut at junior welterweight on January 31st. That victory catapulted him into the No. 1 position in the WBO rankings, putting him within reach of a title opportunity.
However, his immediate future remains uncertain. Davis talked about a title fight at 140 pounds, where Shakur Stevenson holds the WBO belt, while also expressing interest in moving up to 147 to pursue bigger opportunities.
Cruz, meanwhile, is coming off a majority decision loss to IBF lightweight champion Raymond Muratalla on Jan. 24 in Las Vegas. The result slowed his rise, but his amateur success against Davis continues to hang over both fighters as their professional careers move forward on separate tracks.
