Borussia Dortmund beat FSV Mainz 05 4-0, with Serhou Guirassy scoring a brace and Julian Ryerson with three assists.
Borussia Dortmund produced a great performance against FSV Mainz 05, securing a decisive 4-0 win at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK. Julian Ryerson was the architect of Dortmund’s early dominance, providing three assists in a rampant first-half display.
Going into the game, Borussia Dortmund were second in the Bundesliga, riding a five-game winning streak. 14th-placed Mainz were aiming to move away from the relegation zone despite a mixed run of recent results. The home side looked to maintain their title challenge on 13 February 2026.
The hosts asserted their authority quickly. Just after Silvan Widmer was booked for Mainz in the ninth minute, Serhou Guirassy opened the scoring. Julian Ryerson made a pinpoint assist, which Guirassy converted to put Dortmund ahead.
The lead was doubled almost immediately in the 15th minute. Ryerson was again the provider, sending a perfectly weighted pass to Maximilian Beier. Beier made no mistake, slotting the ball past Mainz goalkeeper Daniel Batz to establish a comfortable two-goal cushion.
Dortmund continued to press their lead. Although Niklas Süle picked up a yellow card in the 23rd minute, it did not deter the home team. Mainz made an early substitution in the 27th minute, bringing on Kacper Potulski for Stefan Bell, looking for stability.
Serhou Guirassy then scored his second goal of the game just before the break in the 42nd minute. Julian Ryerson completed his hat-trick of assists, setting up Guirassy for another clinical finish. Dortmund headed into half-time with a comprehensive three-goal lead.
At the break, Borussia Dortmund maintained a commanding position, having dismantled Mainz’s defense with ruthless efficiency. Mainz faced an uphill battle, needing a dramatic turnaround to salvage anything from the encounter.
The second half started with a tactical change for Dortmund as Luca Reggiani replaced Niklas Süle. Mainz’s struggles continued, with Stefan Posch earning a yellow card in the 56th minute for a foul.
Both teams made a flurry of substitutions around the hour mark, trying to freshen up their lineups. Mainz brought in Silas, Philipp Mwene and Paul Nebel, while Dortmund introduced Chukwubuike Adamu, Fábio Silva and Julian Brandt, among others.
Dortmund continued to control possession and stifled any Mainz comeback attempts. The visitors’ frustration mounted and culminated in an unfortunate moment in the 84th minute. Dominik Kohr inadvertently turned the ball into his own net, extending Dortmund’s lead to 4-0.
Dortmund’s attacking prowess was evident with 7 shots on target from a total of 14, comfortably exceeding their 1.74 expected goals (xG). Mainz recorded 4 shots on goal from a total of 9, but failed to convert their 1.43 xG. Dortmund enjoyed 55% possession.
This dominant 4-0 victory cemented Borussia Dortmund’s strong position in the Bundesliga table. It underlined their attacking threat and defensive solidity, keeping their impressive winning streak intact. Mainz, meanwhile, will be looking to regroup after a difficult trip to SIGNAL IDUNA PARK.
