Burnley staged a stunning comeback at Selhurst Park, scoring three goals in six minutes to stun Crystal Palace 3-2.
Crystal Palace started strongly, controlling possession early on against a Burnley side desperate for points. The Eagles, in 15th place, were hoping to distance themselves from the relegation zone. 19th-placed Burnley needed a spark for their survival bid.
Palace’s dominance paid off in the 17th minute when Jørgen Strand Larsen headed home a precise finish. Adam Wharton provided the assist, setting up the first goal. Selhurst Park erupted as the home side took the lead.
Larsen continued his impressive performance, scoring his second goal in the 33rd minute. Jefferson Lerma provided the assist, allowing Larsen to double Palace’s lead. The Eagles appeared firmly in control with a two-goal cushion.
However, the game changed dramatically shortly before the break. Burnley pulled one back in the 40th minute through Hannibal Mejbri. Marcus Edwards assisted the goal, giving the visitors hope.
Four minutes later, Jaidon Anthony equalized for Burnley, beating the keeper with a pass from Lesley Ugochukwu. The Clarets then took an incredible lead in first-half stoppage time. A deflection by Jefferson Lerma resulted in an unfortunate own goal in the 45+2 minute.
The half-time whistle allowed a stunned Selhurst Park crowd to process the chaotic end to the first period. Patrick Vieira faced a monumental task to galvanize his Crystal Palace side. Burnley, unexpectedly ahead, looked to hold on to their advantage.
Palace came out for the second half determined to find an equaliser, making an immediate substitution. Chadi Riad replaced Jefferson Lerma as the Eagles pressed high. Burnley’s defense, however, stood firm in the face of the home side’s attacks.
Despite 64% possession and numerous attempts, Crystal Palace struggled to break down Burnley’s resolute backline. The home side registered 20 shots in total, but only three tested the Burnley keeper. The substitutions were intended to alter the dynamics of the game.
Burnley’s Hannibal Mejbri was shown a yellow card for unsportsmanlike conduct in the 74th minute, reflecting the growing tension in the match. The Clarets managed the rest of the game defensively. They got a vital away win.
The stats highlighted Crystal Palace’s frustration; they recorded a Goals Expected (xG) of 1.83 on 20 shots. Burnley, on the other hand, scored three times on just 8 shots and an xG of 0.52. This showed some remarkable clinical finishing from the visitors.
This impressive result provides crucial points for Burnley in their fight against relegation to the Premier League. For Crystal Palace, letting a two-goal lead slip away is a bitter pill to swallow. It raises questions about his resilience and defensive consistency.
