Le Havre secured a hard-fought 2-1 win over Strasbourg at the Stade Océane, capitalizing on a crucial first-half red card to claim all three points.
Le Havre triumphed over Strasbourg 2-1 in an enthralling Ligue 1 match on 8 February 2026. Issa Soumaré emerged as the hero, sealing the victory after Strasbourg played most of the game with ten men.
Coming into the game, Le Havre were 15th in the league, needing points to move away from the relegation zone. Strasbourg, ranked seventh, for its part, wanted to consolidate its European push. Both teams had a lot to play for at the Stade Océane.
The game was ignited in the 26th minute when Stephan Zagadou from Havre opened the scoring. Sofiane Boufal provided a pinpoint assist and Zagadou expertly drilled the ball home to give the home side the lead.
However, the complexion of the game changed dramatically just three minutes later. Strasbourg’s Ibrahima Doukoure was shown a straight red card for holding, leaving his team at a significant disadvantage. Ben Chilwell also saw a yellow card for a foul soon after.
Despite being a dejected man, Strasbourg showed remarkable resilience. Martial Godo found the back of the net in the 36th minute, drawing his side level with a well-taken goal against the odds, silencing the home crowd.
At halftime, the score was 1-1, creating a tense second half. Le Havre surely debated how to capitalize on their numerical advantage, while Strasbourg prepared for a challenging defensive effort to hold their ground.
Le Havre took advantage after the restart. His persistence paid off in the 54th minute, when Issa Soumaré pulled the score back. Arouna Sangante provided the assist and Soumaré calmly slotted home from inside the area.
The game turned badly in the latter stages as Strasbourg fought bravely for an equaliser. Le Havre’s Lucas Gourna-Douath was shown a yellow card for fouling in the 74th minute. Scorer Soumaré was also shown a yellow card for a foul in the 85th minute.
Despite Strasbourg’s best effort, Le Havre managed the game well, holding on to a narrow lead at the final whistle. Substitutions from both sides tried to affect the pace and outcome of the game.
Le Havre finished with an expected goal (xG) of 0.85 on 15 total shots, with 7 on target, reflecting their attacking intent. Strasbourg managed an xG of 0.44 on 9 total shots, with only 3 hitting the target, hampered by their initial red card. Possession of the ball was closely contested, with Le Havre having 51%.
This vital 2-1 win moves Le Havre away from the Ligue 1 danger zone, providing a much-needed morale boost. Strasbourg will rue Doukoure’s dismissal, which seriously complicated their quest for points and a top league position.
