Juventus staged a spectacular late comeback to salvage a 2-2 draw against Lazio, with Pierre Kalulu scoring in stoppage time.
Juventus bounced back at the Allianz Stadium to earn a dramatic 2-2 draw against Lazio. Pierre Kalulu emerged as the hero, striking in the dying seconds to complete an impressive comeback for the Bianconeri.
The home side went into the match sitting fourth in Serie A, keen to cement their Champions League ambitions. Eighth-placed Lazio looked for a crucial away win to boost their hopes of European qualification. Recent form suggested a tight contest between two determined sides.
The game started with Juventus showing offensive intent. A promising moment for the home side in the 26th minute saw Teun Koopmeiners find the back of the net, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside by VAR. Lazio’s defense held firm under pressure, absorbing early attacks.
Lazio’s determination paid off just before the break. Pedro broke the deadlock in the 45th minute, guiding home a clinical finish after a smart assist from Daniel Maldini. This late finish took the visitors into the break with a valuable lead.
Juventus faced an uphill battle at the interval, needing a significant turnaround in performance to turn the tide. Lazio, meanwhile, looked to maintain their defensive shape and take advantage of counter-attacks after the restart.
Lazio immediately doubled their lead after the restart. Gustav Isaksen scored just two minutes into the second half, in the 47th minute. He extended the visitors’ lead to a daunting 2-0.
Juventus refused to give up. Weston McKennie pulled one back for the home side in the 59th minute, latching on to an Andrea Cambiaso pass to reduce the deficit. The goal ignited the Allianz Stadium crowd.
The Bianconeri pressed relentlessly in the closing stages. Several substitutions injected new offensive impetus. Lazio defended bravely, with Alessio Romagnoli yellow carded in the 81st minute for a late tackle.
Juventus dominated possession with 63% and unleashed a remarkable total of 33 shots, 8 of which tested the goalkeeper. His expected goals (xG) stood at 2.63, highlighting his offensive production. Lazio, on the other hand, managed just 9 shots and an xG of 1.06, based on clinical finishing and solid goaltending, with 6 saves.
The persistence of the home team paid off in the most spectacular way. In stoppage time, in the 90th minute plus six, Pierre Kalulu found the equaliser. His powerful strike, assisted by substitute Jérémie Boga, sent the Juventus faithful into raptures.
This dramatic 2-2 draw keeps Juventus fourth in Serie A, although they drop crucial points in their quest for top spot. Lazio will regret letting a two-goal lead slip away, but will take a valuable point from a tough game away from home.
