City remain six points clear of Arsenal at the top, but their late success on Merseyside ensured the pressure remained firmly on the leaders. With another game to come, Pep Guardiola’s men have the chance to further close the gap at the top.
Late drama swings momentum at Anfield
The reigning champions secured all three points in stoppage time, com Erling Haaland converted from the spot to seal a dramatic turnaround. The goal was just Guardiola’s second win at Anfield in 11 visits, underscoring the importance of the result.
Liverpool had gone ahead with an impressive free throw from Dominik Szoboszlai after the interval. However, City responded strongly in the closing stages, with Bernard Silva — back from injury — finding the equalizer before the decisive moment arrived.
The winning penalty was awarded after Alisson was brought down Matthew Nunes inside the area, giving Haaland the opportunity to complete the comeback.
Keane highlights the psychological impact on Arsenal
Analyzing the match on Sky Sports, Keane underlined the importance of the win for City, pointing to their poor historic returns at the stadium and the resilience shown after falling behind.
He noted that Guardiola had previously spoken of the need for courage and character in such an environment, qualities Keane felt were clearly on display, especially after the break. Although City had moved the ball well earlier in the contest, it was their hunger and determination later on that impressed him most.
Keane added that while Arsenal maintain a healthy lead, seeing City come back from a losing position to claim maximum points could have a significant mental effect on the title race.
Arsenal comply but City refuse to concede
Earlier in the weekend, Arsenal had taken care of their own responsibilities with a 3-0 win. Sunderland at the Emirates Stadium, maintaining their cushion at the top of the table.
However, City’s comeback ensured the gap could still be cut to three points if they went through Fulham midweek, keeping the battle for the championship very much alive.
