Athletic Club prevailed in Levante with a 4-2 victory, thanks to a brace from Gorka Guruzeta and a crucial early red card for the visitors.
The La Liga clash at a lively Estadio de San Mamés on 8 February 2026 saw Athletic Club (11th, 25 points) looking to improve their inconsistent form. Meanwhile, Levante, ranked 19th (18 points) arrived eager to escape the relegation zone. Both teams had a lot to play for.
The game took a decisive turn in the 17th minute. Levante defender Alex Matturro received a straight red card for a professional foul, leaving his team with ten men. This early dismissal drastically altered Levante’s game plan and gave Athletic a significant advantage.
Athletic took advantage of their numerical superiority just after the half-hour mark. In the 29th minute, Gorka Guruzeta scored the first goal, with the expert assistance of Iñigo Ruiz de Galarreta. The home crowd erupted as their team took the lead.
Five minutes later, Guruzeta struck again. He scored the second of the afternoon in the 34th minute, this time with a precise pass from Iñaki Williams. Athletic went into the break with a significant two-goal lead, seemingly in control.
Levante faced an uphill battle at half-time, two goals down and a man down. They needed a strategic overhaul and immense resilience to face any challenge in the second half. Athletic, on the other hand, wanted to keep calm and see the result.
Despite their disadvantage, Levante showed great strength after the restart. Both teams made several substitutions during the second half. Athletic looked to manage the game, while Levante looked for the exit.
Levante found a lifeline in the 81st minute. Unai Elgezabal pulled one back and gave the visitors some hope against the odds. The goal injected a burst of energy into Levante’s attack, which led to a tense final period.
However, Athletic quickly extinguished any hopes of a comeback. In the 86th minute, substitute Nico Serrano scored Athletic’s third goal with an assist from Selton Sánchez. This restored their two-goal lead and looked to seal victory for the home side.
The drama wasn’t over yet. Jon Ander Olasagasti scored for Levante in the 90th+4th minute, reducing the gap to one again. That late goal offered one last glimmer of hope.
However, Athletic had the last word. Robert Navarro scored in the 90th+9th minute, after another assist from Iñaki Williams. This ensured the victory of the local team by 4-2.
The stats reflect Athletic’s dominance, especially after the red card. They accumulated 1.71 expected goals (xG) from 22 total shots, with 7 on target, along with 55% possession. Levante managed only 0.5 xG and 6 shots, with 3 on target.
This overall win sees Athletic Club consolidate their mid-table position, gaining valuable points in the League standings. Levant, despite their valiant effort with ten men, remains entrenched in the relegation battle, needing to find form quickly.
