Napoli secured a dramatic 3-2 victory over Genoa, with Rasmus Højlund’s 95th-minute penalty proving decisive in a thrilling Serie A clash.
The visitors secured a hard-fought victory at the Luigi Ferraris, overcoming an early deficit and a late red card to claim all three points. This crucial result helps Napoli consolidate their position at the top level of the league.
Napoli, sitting comfortably in third place, were aiming to extend their lead in the Champions League qualifying places. Meanwhile, 14th-placed Genoa looked for valuable points to move away from the relegation zone. The stage was set for an intense contest.
The match burst into life almost immediately. Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret was shown a yellow card for bringing down an opponent in the box in the second minute. Ruslan Malinovskyi calmly stepped forward and converted the resulting penalty in the third minute to give Genoa a dream start.
However, Napoli responded quickly. Rasmus Højlund found the back of the net in the 20th minute, equalizing the score. Just two minutes later, Scott McTominay completed the quick turnaround, guiding home a goal in the 22nd minute with an assist from Amir Rrahmani, putting Napoli 2-1 ahead.
Napoli controlled possession, with 60% of the ball, looking to extend their lead before the break. Genoa fought hard, looking for counter-attacking opportunities as the first half drew to a close.
At half-time, Genoa needed a strong second-half performance to recover from losing their early lead. Napoli aimed to maintain calm and tactical discipline to secure victory.
The second half brought more drama. Lorenzo Colombo struck for Genoa in the 57th minute, restoring parity and igniting the home crowd. The score stood at 2-2, marking a tense final period.
Napoli’s task was made even more difficult when Juan Jesús received his second yellow card in the 76th minute for holding, resulting in a red card. Napoli faced the last quarter of an hour with only ten men on the pitch.
Genoa pressed for a winning goal against the lackluster opposition, but Napoli held firm. In the 95th minute of added time, Højlund rose to take a penalty, securing a dramatic late winner for the visitors.
The match statistics highlighted Napoli’s efficiency, with five shots on goal from a total of 14 shots, generating an expected goals (xG) figure of 2.3. Genoa managed three shots on goal from a total of 12 shots, with an xG of 1.32, despite their numerical advantage at the end.
This thrilling 3-2 victory sees Napoli maintain their third position in Serie A with 49 points. Genoa remain in 14th place with 23 points, left to rue a missed opportunity to gain ground at home.
