Cutting around elevated greens can be tricky, often leading to thick shots that miss the mark and add unnecessary strokes.
The key is to have a clear plan – one that helps you ask the right questions before drawing a club. Do this and you’ll give yourself a much better chance of consistently getting the ball closer to the hole.
1. Assess the situation
Questions to address:
- How is the ball sitting on the grass?
- What is the slope under your feet and how does the green slope toward your landing spot?
- Is the terrain wet, dry, muddy or hard?
- Is there a smell and how strong is it?
- Is cutting really the best option, or can you roll the ball on the putting surface? Do you need to hold an obstacle or navigate thick grass?
2. Choose the right club
Questions to address:
- What clubs have you practiced with and feel confident using to produce the swing you need?
- Do the conditions call for more loft and bounce, or less?
THE execute a successful chip shot, first you have to hit the ball. After answering the above questions, choose the club that offers the appropriate loft for the situation – and then apply a technique that matches the conditions so that the club contacts the ball before the ground.
For example, for a right-handed player who scrapes into a green turtle from a flat, muddy lie, set up with a tight stance and a little more weight on the lead side. Your right side should land higher than your left, with the ball just behind center. Keep your head slightly forward, chest turned to the left, and make sure the bottom of your swing arc is in front of the ball.
Whether you need to hit up or down, your setup writes the script. Practice from different lies and experiment with variations in club selection, stance, ball position and club delivery. Spend time in the practice area learning how these adjustments affect contact and trajectory.
Build that awareness and you’ll hit the course with confidence in your options – and far less likely to chip another chip.
