thus Padraig Harrington asked then: If he didn’t believe those pros had a better short game than he did, did that mean he had the best short game? The three-time major winner then stopped.
And an interesting piece of social media content continued.
It came from the people with the DP World Tour social media teamfrom the range at this week’s Qatar Masters, where a producer had this to say to Harrington: He was going to name 10 names – but Harrington got to shout when one of those names possessed a better short game, in his opinion. You may have seen similar style videos. They’re engaging — we like rankings and we like opinions — and that was it, too.
Did Aphibarnrat have a better short game? Harrington did not speak. What about Jordan Spieth, Matt Fitzpatrick or Cam Smith? Nothing. Rory McIlroy, Patrick Reed or Shane Lowry? Nothing. Nor Seve Ballesteros, Phil Mickelson or Tiger Woods?
Still nothing.
“So you’re the best?” – asked the producer.
Harrington then raised a case.
“All I know is,” he said in the video, “when they did the stats in the United States, they added up the hits, they used my worst 10 years, and at that stage, I was third, and that’s only because I’m not a very good player off the fairway. But I’m number one off the rough, and that was the worst of my career.
“If I go to my prime, I was the last professional – as they say, dogs chasing cars, professionals whose putts for pars don’t last. But I was the last putts pro.”
But weren’t Ballesteros, Mickelson or Woods better?
Harrington again had some thoughts.
“Yeah, there’s been some — look, everybody in their time — Phil Mickelson can probably hit the best shots of the best,” he said in the video. “Yeah, Tiger was as good as you could get, as tough as you could get. I don’t think you can argue against Tiger – he didn’t seem to leave anything out there.
“But if it comes down to scratch, I’ll back myself against anybody.”
