Frank Sanchez and Richard Torrez Jr. has reached conditions for an IBF heavyweight title eliminator, paving the way for a fight that will determine the sanctioning body’s next mandatory challenger.
Dan Rafael has reported that the fight is likely to take place on March 28 on the undercard of Sebastian Fundora vs Keith Thurman, although the IBF has yet to issue formal confirmation.
Sanchez enters the eliminator with a record of 25 1 and 18 strikeouts. The Cuban heavyweight established himself as a contender with a decision victory over Efe Ajagba in 2021 and later suffered his first professional loss against Agit Kabayel. He returned earlier this year with a win over Ramon Olivas Echeverria.
Torrez remains undefeated at 14 0 with 12 knockouts. The Olympic silver medalist has been fast-tracked since turning professional and scored his most notable victory last April with a decision over Guido Vianello. He last appeared in November, stopping Tomas Salek in the opening round.
The knockout represents a step up in the game for both fighters. Sanchez brings experience against established heavyweights, while Torrez enters his first sanctioned title run as a professional.
The winner will move into position as the IBF’s mandatory challenger at heavyweight, adding clarity to a division that continues to sort itself out after the recent title move.
If finalized as expected, Sanchez vs Torrez will put two contrasting contenders on a clear path to a world title opportunity.
