Abhishek’s innings was remarkable not only for its impact but also for how close he came to rewriting history. The left-hander reached his half-century in just 14 balls, missing Yuvraj Singh’s record of fastest T20I fifty by just two deliveries.
Despite being a little off the mark, Abhishek’s knock was instrumental in dismantling New Zealand’s bowling attack during the Powerplay. His fearless intent saw India take control of the contest in the first few overs and sealed the result well before the finish.
A power play to remember
India’s approach at the top was relentless. The hosts recorded the second-highest powerplay score in T20 Internationals, reaching 94 for 2 in the powerplay. The only higher effort is the 95 they posted against England earlier, underlining the extent of India’s dominance in Guwahati.
The required run rate was crushed early, with New Zealand left looking for a reply as the boundaries flowed freely. An aggressive start ensured that the chase never slipped and allowed India to complete the target in double quick time.

Speaking after the match, Abhishek emphasized that his aggressive style is due to the clarity and confidence of the team. He explained that executing the team’s plans consistently, although not always easy, is the main goal.
“This is what my team wants from me and I always want to execute” Abhishek said in the post-match press conference. He also emphasized the mental aspect of T20 batting and the importance of a supportive dressing room atmosphere.
On the subject of Yuvraj Singh’s record, Abhishek acknowledged the challenge and termed it an exceptional benchmark and said modern T20 cricket continues to push boundaries. He suggested that more exciting moments are in store with the batsmen’s performances in the series.
“It’s more than impossible for anyone, but then again, you never know. Any batsman can do it because I think all the batsmen have batted very well in this series as well and it’s going to be fun from now on.” Abhishek added.
