Former England captain Kevin Pietersen He believes that the mega event will be shaped by brave youngsters who are not afraid to take the game from the first ball.
Kevin Pietersen has named two stars who are rocking the charts in the T20 World Cup 2026
Speaking at the ICC’s launch event, Pietersen mentioned two explosive batsmen that he felt could make a big mark on the 2026 edition – South Africa’s Devald Brewis and of India Abhishek Sharma.
Pietersen was full of praise for Brevis, hinting at his recent SA20 thrashing Pretoria Capitals it showed maturity beyond his years. With his side reeling at 5 for 7, Brevis batted deep, soaked up the pressure and took his team to a competitive total of 143. According to Pietersen, this innings could be the turning point in Brevis’ career. Often labeled a “one-trick pony” for his six-hitting feat, the young South African showed composure, game awareness and adaptability – qualities that are invaluable in World Cup cricket. Pietersen pointed out that such knocks silence the critics and highlight Brevis’ evolution into a complete T20 corpse.
“Brevis played another incredible innings last night. A couple of days ago I was calling a game in Johannesburg where his team, the (Sourav) Ganguly-led Pretoria Capitals, were struggling. They were five for seven (in the fifth) and Brevis went (in) and batted for 15 and they scored just 141 or 140. (143/6) That’s something Brevis always criticizes, he stands there and trying to hit six after six. Pietersen said.
Meanwhile, Abhishek earned glowing praise from Pietersen for what he described as one of the best T20 innings he had ever witnessed. Recalling Abhishek’s sensational 54-ball 135 against England at the Wankhede Stadium, Pietersen revealed how he personally congratulated the young Indian after the game. Thirteen sixes, fearless batting and complete dominance of a quality bowling attack convinced Pietersen that Abhishek was not just a talent but a “proper star” built for the biggest stage.
“Abhishek Sharma. I mean, my God. I remember when Abhishek got 150 (135 off 54 balls; seven fours, 13 sixes) against England, remember last year at the Wankhede Stadium? We were watching it and (then) he came and we interviewed him after the game. I just have to put my hands on him, I said. Shots I’ve seen in international cricket.’ That kid is a proper star” Pietersen added.

Young people are preparing to celebrate the mega event
Pietersen’s selection reflects a wider trend heading into the T20 World Cup 2026 – the rise of fearless youngsters among teams. Almost every team boasts players cut from the same cloth as Abhishek and Brevis: free-playing, range-recovering hitters who thrive under pressure. In modern T20 cricket, youth brings innovation, unpredictability and a refreshing lack of baggage, all of which can turn games on their heads.
With India and Sri Lanka providing conditions that reward both strength and skill, the tournament is expected to be a launching pad for several new stars. Seasoned campaigners will still have their say, but it’s the young guns who set the pace, light up the scoreboards and capture imaginations.
