Why Muratalla vs Cruz is considered a ring title fight

There has already been talk about whether this fight should also carry The Ring title. It doesn’t, and the reason is procedural rather than competitive. Shakur Stevenson still sits atop the division’s rankings, even if his focus has shifted. Stevenson challenges Teofimo Lopez for the WBO title on Jan. 31 at 140 and has not said if he plans to return to 135 after that. There is already discussion about him moving higher again if he wins. At this point, the only straight path back to lightweight would come after a loss, and that’s not how most people expect the fight to go.

This uncertainty left the division in an uncomfortable place. Gervonta Davis has been quiet since his draw with Lamont Roach, with legal issues adding to the lack of clarity on his next move. William Zepeda remains active, but without a clear next step that brings the division together.

This is how Muratalla and Cruz end up carrying more weight than usual. Muratalla brings rounds, consistency and the look of someone who knows what long fights require. Cruz brings speed, pedigree, and the pressure that comes with being pushed fast into this level. Nor is it expected that the division will settle itself. They force the issue.

The comparison with the WBO picture only sharpens that point. Abdullah Mason, just 21, earned his belt against Sam Noakes by taking a lot along the way. It was a tough battle. It also showed how much development is still ahead of him. The way Muratalla and Cruz come in on Saturday looks more set.

Jake Donovan floated the idea that Muratalla and Cruz could reasonably already fight for The Ring title. The calendar blocks that for now, and Stevenson remains part of the picture until at least next weekend. After that, the list narrows quickly.

This battle will not mend the divide overnight. This will answer a simpler question. Who is ready to stand up while the rest of lightweights decide what comes next.
