Jorge Lorenzo thinks Valentino Rossi saw Marc Marquez as a ‘successor’ before 2015.

MotoGP insiders felt 2015 was ‘now or never’ for Rossi. And it went on to become one of the most controversial seasons of his career.

When they collided so famously in Malaysia, the damage was done, but Jorge Lorenzo thinks it’s time to take over from Rossi Marquez.

“Marc had a problem with the Honda in 2015 and crashed several times, so he was third in the championship, and Valentino was leading,” continued Lorenzo.

“I think that’s when Valentino opened his eyes and saw a chance to win the championship again, so he became a killer again, a killer who had been dormant for three or four years.

That dynamic changed when he started fighting it. The man who had once wanted to do anything for him was now completely against him.

Lorenzo believes part of that is down to understanding Rossi’s replacement as he had a chance to win again in 2015.

But before that, they were walking a rocky road. There had been signs that their relationship had soured for years, and Malaysia 2015 proved to be a boiling point.
