IND vs NZ: Rib injury rules out Washington Sundar for rest of ODI series; change was announced

The 26-year-old felt discomfort in his lower left rib while bowling in his first ODI. Sundar managed to complete five overs for 27 runs, but was forced to go to mid-wicket in the New Zealand innings. He did not return to the field for the rest of the innings, which raised early concerns among the team management and medical staff.

Despite his injury, Sundar showed admirable resilience by batting at No.8 during India’s chase. Clearly troubled, he still took part in the tense phase of the match as India cruised to a four-wicket victory. However, post-match assessments confirmed that the injury required close monitoring, eventually ruling him out of the remaining games.

Note that Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirming the development, stated that Sundar was discharged after the onset of pain in the rib area. The decision was taken as a precaution to avoid aggravating the injury, especially with a long international schedule ahead.

“Washington Sundar reported acute discomfort in his left rib while bowling during the first ODI against New Zealand at the BCA Stadium, Vadodara on Sunday. He will undergo further tests, after which the BCCI Medical Team will take an expert opinion. Washington has been ruled out of the remaining two matches of the ODI series,” Read BTSO’s statement.

A replacement for Sundar has been announced

Following Sundar’s exclusion from the ODI series, the BCCI Men’s Selection Committee Ayush Badoni as his replacement in the squad. The young all-rounder has been picked to bolster India’s options ahead of the remaining two matches of the series. Badoni is expected to join the team in Rajkot, which will host the second ODI on January 14, and will be available for selection as the team management changed their combination following Sundar’s injury.

“The Men’s Selection Committee has appointed Ayush Badoni as his replacement. Badoni will liaise with the squad in Rajkot, the venue of the second ODI.” BCCI added.

The list of injuries worries India

Sundar is the third Indian player to suffer from injury in a row. Goalkeeper-prone Rishabh pants Earlier, the young batsman was ruled out of the ODI series after suffering a side strain Tilak Varma will miss the first three T20Is after groin surgery. The growing list of unavailable players has increased the pressure on team management as they aim to manage the workload without compromising on performance.
