Being a three-format regular for the Indian cricket team is one of the toughest challenges in modern cricket, given the intense competition and ever-evolving demands of each format. And the former India opener believes so Yashasvi Jaiswal the youngster who has the talent to succeed between formats is missing a piece on his way to becoming a complete format player.
Being a three-format player remains a rare achievement
Consistently excelling in Tests, ODIs and T20Is is not so easy in an era where formats demand contrasting skill sets. The depth of Indian cricket means that even highly talented players have to outperform their peers in the post-season to stay relevant. Only a select few have been able to adapt their technique, temperament and mindset to meet the changing demands of red-ball patience, 50-over balance and T20 explosiveness. For young cricketers, the path to becoming indispensable across formats often depends on producing outstanding performances in high-pressure tournaments.
Yashasvi Jaiswal’s rise and gaps in his white ball journey
Jaiswal is regarded as one of India’s brightest batting prospects and has already established himself as a regular in the Test side. His composure, hunger for big scores and ability to bat for long hours impressed selectors and fans alike. However, his exposure to white-ball cricket remains limited, especially in T20Is where competition for slots is fierce. While Jaiswal has shone in limited-overs cricket, he is yet to cement a permanent role, leaving questions about whether he is ready to be considered as a tri-format certainty.
India has come face to face New Zealand in a white-ball series of three ODIs followed by five T20Is starting in Vadodara on Sunday, January 11. Although Jaiswal has been included in the ODI squad, his absence from the T20I plans underscores the selectors’ cautious approach and the importance of them making a lasting impact.

The ex-opener presents a blueprint for Jaiswal to become an all-format star
Addressing the topic on the YouTube channel, the former opened Akash Chopra It offered a clear road map for the development of Jaiswal. A blockbuster IPL season could change Jaiswal’s position in white-ball cricket, according to the former opener. Chopra emphasized that while scoring 400 to 450 runs in a season is respectable, it doesn’t match Jaiswal’s potential or the expectations that come from him.
“Yashavi, I have a request from you. I want you to have a 700 IPL season. Every year it would be like that for you. You are having a 400-450 season, but that is not good enough. Not for you, not for your standard,” Chopra said.
Chopra urged the left-hander to aim higher, especially to set a benchmark of 700 in an IPL campaign. According to him, such a season will force the selectors’ hand and Jaiswal will not be overlooked in all formats. According to Chopra, a dominant IPL not only reflects consistency and adaptability, but also demonstrates the match-winning effect required at the international level.
“I need a 700-run season to break the door and come in. That’s what I expect from him. That’s what I want from him. So Yashasvi has to actually become a three-format player sooner or later.” he added.
