The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) officially approached International Cricket Council (ICC)Away from India, the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 is looking to relocate its matches. The move follows growing concerns across the board about player safety, fueled by the recent release of the star accelerator. Mustafizur Rahman of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, BCB president Aminul Islam confirmed that the board had sent a letter to the ICC and would decide on the next course of action based on the global body’s response.
BCB president explains decision to appeal to ICC
Aminul Islam announced that the decision was made after extensive internal discussions. “You know we had two meetings with all the directors of the cricket board before we took this decision and at this point we are not sure about sending our team to India to play in the World Cup.” he said.
According to Aminul, their concerns and requests were clearly reflected in the letter sent by BCB to BCC. He stressed that safety is the main issue driving the board’s position, not competition or political considerations. The BCB is now awaiting feedback from the ICC and is awaiting a formal meeting to discuss the matter further.
“So we wrote a letter to the ICC and clearly stated what we wanted to say in the letter. We are waiting for them to say that we will have a meeting with them soon where we will express our concerns.” Aminul added.
Mustafizur Rahman’s IPL release: The reason for the controversy
The controversy stems from the release of Mustafizur from his IPL contract Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The decision, taken ahead of the IPL season, was seen by Bangladeshi officials as a worrying signal about the treatment and safety of Bangladeshi players in India.
The BCB believes that if a contracted Bangladeshi cricketer can be prevented from participating in the domestic league, it partly raises wider concerns about the security of the national team during a major ICC event in India.
Aminul announced that BCB has not contacted BCTI directly regarding the issue. “We are not contacting the BCCI because it is an ICC case. We are contacting the ICC” stated.
He also noted that the clauses mentioned in the letter are within the framework of the ICC’s hosting and participation agreements, and Bangladesh believes it has a legal procedural basis to raise concerns.

India-Bangladesh ties and future tours
The incident has led to speculation that India may refrain from touring Bangladesh for the white-ball series scheduled for September, given the strained relationship between the two boards. However, Aminul was keen to separate cricket ties from security considerations.
“It is one thing to play cricket, bilateral series or World Cup between two countries and security concerns are another matter” he added. “For now, we are thinking about the world championship.”
