Mid-week sessions at the European Athletics Championships will provide a great track and field experience next summer.
It’s easy to imagine that some of the best athletics at the 2026 European Athletics Championships in Birmingham will come at the weekend. But that’s not always the case, and there are some great viewing experiences to be had in the mornings and mid-week.
⚡ Monday August 10 (morning) – imagine how exciting it will be to see the opening events of the championships as the action kicks off on day one. At London 2012, Jess Ennis-Hill set a British record in the 100m hurdles on the opening morning of the athletics programme, and Birmingham 26 saw similar fireworks in the women’s 100m and 400m hurdles, plus the men’s 400m and 800m.
🔥 Tuesday, August 11 (morning) – Keely Hodgkinson and Georgia Hunter Bell are likely to compete in the women’s 800m. There are also men’s 100m and men’s high jump and discus qualifiers.
🎆 Wednesday, August 12 (morning) – when there are combined events, the action in the stadium is always busy. This session sees the start of the decathlon, while the women’s sprinters will be treated to the first round of the 200m and 400m.

🌪️ Thursday, August 13 (evening) – this midweek evening session promises to be brilliant. In the women’s pole vault, not only Molly Cowdery wins gold, but Dinah Usher-Smith v Amy Hunt v Daryl Nathan in the women’s 200m final and Max Burgin and Ben Pattison in the men’s 800m final, among others. Throw in the climax of the decathlon and women’s triple jump and 3000m finals and it could be one of the best sessions of the entire championships.
