Brooks’ coach’s spotlight. Danny Mackay, Brooks Beasts Track Club, Thoughts on Tempo Runs and Easy Days

Danny Mackey is the founding coach of the Brooks Beasts Track Club, now in its twelfth year.

RunBlogRun #1. What are your thoughts on Tempo Runs for high schoolers?

Danny McKee. They tend to go very quickly. I suggest keeping the pace 25 seconds slower than their current average mile pace over 5k. So if they are currently racing at six-minute pace, the Tempo pace should be 6.25 per mile.

RunBlogRun #2. For high school students, we offer a 20-minute run.

Danny McKee. That seems true for high school runners.

RunBlogRun #3. Any suggestions on where to run Tempo Runs?

Danny McKee. On flat areas, perhaps on a track or trail (Editor’s note: it’s best to have a site with little traffic).

RunBlogRun #4. How about a recovery day after Tempo Day?

Danny McKee. Keep recovery days very easy. It’s time for an easy total run time, don’t worry about pace, keep it really, really easy.
