When it comes to calling the short game, there’s no other way to improve than to practice, practice, practice!
Unfortunately, when you go up and down the drive limit, there are probably few amateur players actually putting in some work with their wedgesand most prefer to hit a bunch of balls with their driver, woods or irons.
Don’t get me wrong, those clubs are important – every club in your bag is – but if you’re trying to score less and not just hit the ball better, focusing on the short game is the way to go.
And one man who knows a little about sticky shots is GOLF Teacher to see Parker McLachlin, aka The boss of short gameswhich works with players of all abilities to improve their contact around the green.
As someone who has taken a few lessons from McLachlin, I have seen his magic first hand. Not only does it make you think differently about your next wedge shot, but it also simplifies the process, allowing you to stay loose and use your natural athleticism. Great results often come immediately.
Use this short game warm-up before your next round
Although practicing the short game may not be as fun as trying to bomb the drivesif you understand how to actually organize your practiceit can be both enjoyable and effective.
To help, McLachlin shared an easy 15-minute warm-up routine that every player should add to their daily routine.
As the video above shows, he simply hits five balls from 15 yards off the green, targeting various flags on the practice green to help control touch and distance.
After completing those five shots, McLachlin then moves back just 30 feet (to 25 yards), hitting five more balls. As you can definitely see in the video, he’s really focusing on extending his return and follow through, and making sure his pace is consistent every time.
When he’s done from that distance, McLachlin works on tighter lies, focusing on downhill shots, making sure he gets good contact and feels how balls roll after landing on the green. These are often tricky types of strokes – and can be devastating without practice and good technique – so this is a key area for many disabled people to avoid strokes.
Finally, he moves in a higher and faster shot over a bunker, hitting five shots from this area. This allows him to open his face up, incorporate the bounce and use the speed needed to put a spin on the ball.
Put it all together and you have a fun, challenging and efficient short game warm up that is sure to improve your contact with the wedges. So ditch the driver and hone your skills around the green the next time you’re on the practice range.
