The Olympics may be three years away, but until then, there’s plenty for world-class athletes to sink their teeth into; The Commonwealth Games, World Championships, European Championships and World Indoor Games are just some of the leading events expected in 2026.
So hopefully, with Josh Kerr resting an injured calf, he’ll have a torrid 12 months as one of the best middle-distance runners on the planet.

This year, however, was dry. A strained calf muscle in the 1,500m final at the World Championships was unheard of. True to her nature, Kerr was determined to reach the finish line in Tokyo, with scans confirming that she had in fact made the injury worse by continuing.
It ultimately prevented the Scot from launching a meaningful defense of the 1500m gold he won in Budapest in 2023, so he will look back on the year with disappointment; multiple event wins on the ill-fated Grand Slam circuit, about as good as it got.
The good news is that there are a lot of big fish to fry in 2026. Kerr will defend the 3000m gold medal she won at the 2024 World Indoor Championships, with other important dates in the calendar in August (European Championships) and September (World Championships).
But it’s the Commonwealth Games, you understand, that will be top of the agenda. They are to be held in Glasgow and you won’t find a prouder Scot than Josh Kerr.

He will undoubtedly resume competition with Jakob Ingebrigtsen in 2026. The Norwegian is another major force in middle-distance running, and he and Kerr seem inspired by their competitive anxiety.

But Kerr has it in his hands to remain the top Briton in his chosen disciplines, with Jake Wightman winning silver in the 1500m at the world championships to recapture his best form and Neil Gourley emerging as a key player in the domestic arena.
For Kerr, it just will added inspiration. “I’m already getting better and definitely feeling the fire for 2026,” he commented in the weeks following his World Cup injury.
