‘Everyone knows his quality’: Should Foden return to the England squad?

By Martin Graham

Phil Foden produced a standout performance at the Etihad, recalling both Manchester City i England supporters of his remarkable ability. Last season had been difficult for the 25-year-old, with City enduring a rare trophyless campaign and the midfielder struggling with injuries and personal problems.

Now, Foden seems to have rediscovered his spark. With four goals and three assists in 13 games, he looks back to his confident and expressive self. His display in the 4-1 Champions League win against Borussia Dortmund it was particularly impressive as it cast a shadow Erling Haaland for once this season.

“I’m enjoying my football,” he told TNT Sports. “It’s important for me to play with a smile. The previous year was tough for everyone, but now there’s a strong sense of unity.” City’s attacking fluidity and Foden’s renewed freedom have made him a central figure in Pep Guardiola’s set-up again.

Recovery of the Battle of England

Foden has not featured in England’s last two caps and was previously unavailable for international duty. With the upcoming qualifiers of the World Cup against Serbia i Albaniahis recent form has rekindled discussion of a possible withdrawal.

Competition remains fierce. Jude Bellingham, who has been injured, and Morgan Rogers are among those aiming for the attacking midfield spot. However, Foden’s combination of creativity, control and composure could make him indispensable to Thomas Tuchel’s plans.

Guardiola has expressed his confidence in his player’s international prospects, saying: “Thomas is very intelligent and understands exactly what England need. Everyone knows Phil’s talent, but the squad has a lot of quality players. He just needs to keep proving himself.”

Having stepped out of Kevin De Bruyne’s shadow following the Belgian’s departure, Foden has taken on greater responsibility this season. His maturity and consistency have drawn praise from his coach and fans alike.

Proving again

feet the double against Dortmund was a reminder of their attacking edge. He also extended his tally of goals from outside the box to 11 since the start of last season, the most by any Premier League player in that time. Guardiola has praised his resurgence saying: “He’s back to his best. We lost his goals and his creativity, and today he showed both.”

His contributions have come after a careful return from an ankle injury that limited his minutes early in the season. Highlights include a goal in the Manchester derby and an assist from Haaland in the Champions League win over Napoli.

Former City midfielder Michael Brown believes Foden’s form makes him impossible to overlook: “When Foden is at his best, he can change the game. He’s more mature now, wants to play and knows his role. England need that energy and imagination.”

After winning individual awards and helping England reach the finals of Euro 2024, Foden is now looking for another chance to shine on the international stage. It will soon be revealed whether Tuchel grants that opportunity.
