England captain Harry Brook a sensational knock under great pressure, scripting history with a blistering century First Odi against New Zealand Bay Oval, at Mt Maunganui.
Despite England’s top-order collapse, Brook’s fearless counter-attack led his team to a respectable total and, as the new England captain, he scored an ODI century against the Black Caps on New Zealand soil.
England collapsed early as Zakary Foulkes shone for New Zealand
The match got off to a disastrous start for England after being picked in the first place. New Zealand PACE duo Matt Henry and Zakary Foulkes fell through England’s top order in fiery new ball magic. Debutant Jamie Smith removed Jos Buttler for a golden duck before Henry removed Foulkes from the middle order to leave England at 33/5 in the top 10. It continued when Sam Curran departed after England’s 55/6 deepened their struggles.

He found a crucial ally in Jamie Overton, the pair stitched a 87-run stand for the seventh wicket that saved England from a dire situation. Overton contributed 46 off 54 balls to help steady the innings before Brook unleashed his full strength.
In the 32nd over, Brook tore into Jacob Duffy, hitting three consecutive sixes to bring him to centuries off just 82 balls. Matt Henry then targeted, sending him for three more sixes. His backhand stunned the Bay Oval crowd and temporarily undid England’s Road ahead of Mitchell Santher.
Brook surpassed Ricky Ponting’s record for the highest score by a touring captain in ODIS against New Zealand. Ponting’s unbeaten 141 at Napier (2005), Brook’s 135 is similar to Chris Gayle’s effort at the same venue in 2009.
