Omar Ahmed impresses at Jarrow 10k


It’s been another busy weekend in the UK distance running world as we bring you our latest round.

JARROW 10km, Tyne & Weir, October 19

Omar Ahmed of Birchfield Harriers is back to winning ways. he finished third in last week’s Manchester Half in 62:44, and took the tape by over a minute in the Jarrow 10k men’s race in 29:35.

It came down to North East Project’s Joseph Wilson who beat Morpeth’s Peter Smallcombe in 30:43, a time well outside his best.

In the women’s race, New Zealand’s Sophie Hicks was first home in a personal best of 34:08, eighteen seconds ahead of Esme Davies, who has yet to recover her 32:44 form from last year’s Leeds Abbey Dash.

CABBAGE PATCH 10, Twickenham, London, October 19

Joe Wigfield recorded another away win after running 49:43 in the Cabbage Patch 10k men’s race.

In the past few weeks, Wigfield, who has now switched from the roads to the track, has won the Westminster Mile (3:59), the Ealing Half Marathon (66:40) and the Manchester Half Marathon (62:04).

Annabel Gamow took the Aldershot Jordan-Lee twins Millie and Maddie by more than a minute in the women’s race, but there was also a British best ever in the W60 age group.

There Sarah Gee went on to relaunch her running career after 14 years and beat her own UK all-time best of 63:13 by 36 seconds.

He said: “I was bummed not to go under 63, but Cabbage Patch was really fun for me. They gave me an elite delay because I told them I wanted to improve my Maidenhead times. They were a really great group of people and it was a great race and spirited atmosphere with other runners.

This part of the world is a happy hunting ground for runners looking to set a fast time, and Newark’s Lewis Jagger led Matt Clowes home by eight seconds in 29:33 in the men’s race.

For the women, Sarah Dufour-Jackson improved her personal best by 22 seconds in 32:47 to beat Charlotte Dunnatt, who was also in the new area.
