Ryan Garcia showed his burning hand speed while working at the Mitts at home today. His velocity still seems to be the highest point, as he recovers from five months of rest after surgery.
Old habits die hard
Fans on social media have criticized Ryan’s form in his Mitt workout and pointed out that he opened his eyes closed and mouth wide throughout. It is a habit that Kingry has shown in the past, and he still has to correct it. It is bad enough to allow eyes, but to have his mouth wide open, it is difficult. How in the world did Garcia not solve all the time?
This is a stubborn error that can explain why Rolly Romero beat Garcia on May 2, 2025 in a fight that Ryan was supposed to win. Rolly totally dominated Kingry, dropped him in second place and dropped him unopposed to win an easy unanimous decision of 12 round.
Garcia has not yet mentioned his next opponent. His promoter, Oscar de la Hoya, of Golden Boy Promotions, recommended that he decline the rest of 2025 and return to the ring in 2026.
The risk of becoming irrelevant
It is not ideal for Ryan to sit inactive until next year as he has been out of the ring for his victory over Devin Haney on April 20, 2024, he had an excuse not to fight because he was suspended for a year by the New York State Athletic Commission for his testing for a prohibited substance from his victory over Haney.
If Ryan is healthy enough to fight, he must get at least one battle at the level at the end of 2025 to get him ready for a bigger one in 2026. The show against Romero showed that Garcia should fight as often as possible to tighten his game.
A Rematch with Haney would be another big payday opportunity for Garcia, but for that kind of battle he has to get ready. Devin is likely to be on his bike in a second battle against Ryan, and it will not be easy for him to be close enough to land his left hook. To help sell the battle, Garcia needs to get a win under his belt to show the supporters that he is coming back from his loss.
