Those who woke up early to see the first act of Presidents Cup third session on Saturday the morning may have been a disappointment.

After the end of the first match the first and second holes were heading into their first tee shot, PGA Tour officials sounded the Royal Montrealsuspension of play at 7:23 a.m. ET due to heavy fog.

Playing in the second set, Tony Finau, playing alongside Xander Schauffele in the four-ball session, had to look at the jumbotron to track his shot, which still found its way into the fairway. His opponents, Canadians Corey Conners and Mackenzie Hughes, both got away well with their drives, but the home crowd, unable to see where the ball was going, roared with cheers both times.

The left fairway bunker on the first hole at Royal Montreal, about 270 yards from the tee, was completely obscured by fog when play was suspended.

The PGA Tour initially hoped to keep players in place while they waited for the fog to clear, even putting the first group in a hospitality suite near the second tee, but after about 15 minutes, both first groups were pulled off the course. golf, as players were still allowed to use the range.

Reporting on the ground at Royal Montreal for GOLF this week, James Colgan described the morning’s conditions as “foggy, a little chilly and frankly surprising that play was allowed to begin.”

“If you were up before dawn for the start of today’s four-ball session, you didn’t see much golf before it was stopped,” Colgan said. “We are sitting and waiting a little more. The good news is, if you’re not up early this Saturday morning, you’ll have golf until the evening.”

When NBC picked up coverage of the third day at 8 a.m. ET, PGA Tour video and television rules analyst Mark Dusbabek reported that it would be a while before play resumed.

“It’s going to take a while for this to burn,” Dusbabek said. “We need to be able to see and navigate the golf course.”

Saturday’s official PGA Tour forecast prepared by meteorologist Wade Stettner called for partly cloudy skies and a high of 70 degrees F.

Day three of the Presidents Cup features eight matches in total with four four-ball matches taking place early in the morning followed by a fourth four-ball session starting in the afternoon.

Sunset this evening at Royal Montreal is 6:41 PM ET

This is a developing story and will be updated as new information becomes available.
