Lanny Wadkins remembers it was Booed. And not read.
Both moments came to the remote glasses Ryder. At the 1985 event, played at The Belfry in England, he would have been presented to the first Tee – and the American said he was tired of European faithful around him. Then, four years later, back to the Belfry, Vadkins Create in the 18th hole – and there was only silence.
“There must be five, six people deep after green,” he said. “Everyone has folded their wings, no one applauded my eagle chip entering inside.
“They wanted it to lose.”
The memories came to my mind for the main winner and seven times Ryder Cupper when asked, at Golf Today’s Golf Channel’s show if this year’s Ryder Cup could spend a line. Thought has previously been raised before the event at Bethpage Black In Long Island, NY and last week, in DP World Tour’s BMW PGA ChampionshipRory Mcilroy said that European captain Luke Donald had prepared his team by giving them headphones of virtual reality in an attempt to imitate the noise.
“Just just to simulate sights and sounds and noise,” Mcilroy said in a story Written by Associated Press. “This is the item you will have to deal with. So it’s best to try to densisate yourself as much as possible before you get there. You can get them to say everything you want to say.
“So you can go as close to the bone as you like.”
How about Wadkins thoughts? In “Golf Today”, Wadkins said he hopes Bethpage’s crowd would be under control – and he said he thought American supporters were “brave” in the past but did not get out of hand.
The Captain of the Ryder Cup of 1995 also said this: “I always see very interesting that we never say a word about what happens to us when we are playing in Europe.” Shortly afterwards, he added with a fuss:
“I mean, we got the same treatment there. We just never complained about it.
“Sometimes I think Europeans are just a bunch of wusses and can’t handle heat.”
This year’s Ryder Cup begins next Friday morning at Bethpage Black.
