The WBA’s next king
Tellez, 25, is one of the many talented former Cuban amateur fighters coming through the ranks. His fighting style is a combination of Andy Cruz and David Morrell. He has a similar technical ability to both, but with the heavy hands that the light heavyweight Morrell possesses.
The WBA has not yet increased Tellez to full champion status. Current champion Terence Crawford has not defended his belt since winning it last year on August 3, 2024. Once the WBA has removed Crawford, Tellez is likely to be increased. Tonight’s Tellez-Baraou battle will determine who will be in an excellent position to move into the WBA Championships seat once Crawford is evacuated or stripped.
“He says he has experience and that he will be able to handle it, but he doesn’t know the kind of pressure I’m going to put on Baraou on Saturday,” said Yoenis Tellez about his opponent, Abass Baraou. “I know exactly what needs to be done.”
Tellez completed his amateur career with a record of 102-7 before becoming professional in 2020. He arrives at a unanimous 12-round decision on former IBF and WBA junior middleweight champion Julian ‘J-Rock’ Williams on March 1, 2025 in the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Tellez won with the scores 119-109, 117-111 and 118-110.
Baraou’s experience
“I have all the skills and experience. I just have to be myself on Saturday night and do the work,” Baraou said. “It means a lot. I mean, everything led to this moment. I worked hard, and I am very happy to be here right now, and I can’t wait.
“I have to put him under pressure. I have to be on him all night, and I don’t think he’s ready for me, ‘says Baraou.
