Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana is still expected to have the option of returning to Ligue 1 at some point in the future if things don’t work out for him at Stamford Bridge.
Fofana recently spoke publicly of holding talks with Marseille over the summer, with the Frenchman one of their ambitious targets as they also brought in Mason Greenwood, Adrien Rabiot and Roberto de Zerbi as manager.
Caught offside understands that there is currently no problem between Fofana and Chelsea, nor between the player and the Blues’ new coach Enzo Maresca, so an exit is not considered likely at this stage.
Fofana will likely get a chance to impress Maresca next season, and while there may be a point where that situation is revisited, he was not thought to be one of the players available at the end of the summer.
Maresca spoke at the time that Raheem Sterling and Ben Chilwell were not in his plans, while the likes of Trevoh Chalobah and Armando Broja were also not involved, but Fofana did not put himself in that field, although talks did take place with the OM.
Transfer of Fofana: What’s next for the Chelsea the future of the defender?
Fofana could be open to playing again in his native France at some point in the future, Caught offside understands, although there would likely also be interest from Marseille and other Ligue 1 clubs.
However, Chelsea will be hoping to see the best of Fofana now, hoping the 23-year-old can put his major injury problems behind him.
Fofana is highly thought of at Stamford Bridge and Maresca is now hoping to get the chance to see him further in a position that has been a bit of a problem for the club, with Axel Disasi and Benoit Badiashile underperforming.
