It is not a real surprise for PGA Tour members to rely on the group of thought. As a collective, they are so similar that they can think mostly the same way. They lead similar lives, live in the same regions slim-mainly from taxes-and will even throw similar votes every time they visit the ballot box.
Often it shows itself in the form of positivity – The course is excellent, the greens are excellent, they must shoot lower results -But it is more interesting in the form of non -positivity. Like this week, when some of the best players in the world can not really worry about taking great care of the tour as the penultimate Play off stage of FedEx Cup.
Take Rory Mcilroy’s press availability after his first round on Thursday, where he was asked if the format changed – Sans “initial stroke” – changes his approach.
“I think it would still be good to finish the second after this week just to get a little more money, I think,” Mcilroy said. “Yes, again, I think you are trying your best to win the golf tour. Yes, I think you are just not looking at the leaders’ boards so much because it doesn’t matter to go to next week, where you are.”
Four times in that answer: I think, I think, I think, I think.
There was no conjecture what “play -off” would say more about Mcilroy last week. He overlooked FedEx Cup Chase’s first match, and was already posting on Instagram promotion for the PD World Tour race in Dubai, the events held three months from now. Mcilroy admitted that he wanted an extra break, given how busy his end of 2025 would be, and the sweaty grind of a mid -summer week in Memfis was easy to throw.
Jason Day said he was more than ready for the tournament to get his Play offs somewhere except hot and wet memfis in August. Tournament used to provide stops in New York, Chicago and Boston markets at least every other year. The courses were more “iconic” in the mind of the day than where the shifts go now, with Olympia Fields, Medinah, TPC Boston, etc.
“At one point I hope to go back there because I think it would be nice to go back to some good memories, especially in a golf course I enjoyed playing,” Day said.
You can almost get the entirety of the scottie scheffler’s round press, where he hemmed and rejected and admitted that the current system is alone… FINES.
“I think when you look at FedExcup, I think it’s a bigger discussion,” Scheffler said. “Like if you are going to have a real seasonal race, really the best player every year, the chances are that it won’t come to the interest of a conclusion in most years.”
This year’s format, for Scheffler, is better than Starting. If profit of the FedEx Cup is your goal, you will need a good season to reach Championship“Then it’s on,” Scheffler said. This matches anyone who wants to win a major knowing that they have to qualify for that major and then play well in the right time.
But… Scheffler still liked the original system – when the players took FedEx Cup points throughout the season, even through the tournament – even if he knows it was flawed, as it was difficult for fans to know exactly what it took to win.
Understanding that FedEx Cup’s Play off is so ubiquitous, asks the question: How long can we continue to do this without major changes that is locked in place … forever? Or for at least a few decades – plenty of time to ensure that it means something to the annual calendar. Or it means something closer to what the tournament staff tells you it means.
Without the consistency of the format, visiting the premises the players love, passing those events until August exclusively and guaranteeing what everyone is playing for the particular feeling, the conversation in the play off can end up relying on a completely different direction. For that, our example turns to Scottie Scheffler, whose pre-Turne’s press conference was more about around Ryder cup that everything else. As much as Scheffler had to stop and remember reporters Hey, that’s not for another month.
“I like to answer questions about the Ryder Cup, but that’s funny,” Scheffler said with a thorn. “We’re in the BMW Championship. The Ryder Cup is over a month away. If you want to talk about this week, let’s talk about this week. If not, I have the practice to do. I’m getting ready for a golf tournament.”
Scheffler was with a light heart when he said it, but he said it. You can’t blame what you don’t want to talk about anything, but the BMW championship. But again, you can’t blame reporters who want to talk about an event that is much more important.
