Great Chepsaita Cross Country has been upgraded to the World Gold Level of Athletics

Justin Lagat is currently traveling across the states and this is his column in Kenya Crossroads.

A Mediterranean event that only opened last year, the Great Chepsaita Crossing event in Kenya, has become a gold level event and will take place on December 7th.

The running theme is Run to Educate.

Interestingly, regardless of their age and educational level, all the top 100 will win educational scholarships.

“You can run to win your own scholarship, your child’s scholarship, or another child in need. If you don’t have anyone to award the scholarship to, you can leave it to the Chepsaita organizers to identify a worthy candidate. The organizers will ensure that the scholarships are at the right schools to pay for the education of the selected children.” This is stated on the race website.

Eliud Kipchoge, the greatest marathon runner of all time, was present at the launch of the second edition and noted that by raising the gold level to the event, more international stars will participate, raising its status.

Two-time world marathon champion Abel Kirui was also present at the launch, who was pleased with the organizers of the event for involving schools in developing children’s talents at an early age.

The first edition, which took place last year, was a huge success and it can only get better from there.

Barnaba Korir, Event Director and Athletics Kenya Youth Development Chairman, said: “As a result of last year’s performances, we have come up with several initiatives that will help athletes in school so that we can grow education along with sports. Construction of playgrounds will also be part of the Great Run.”

This coming weekend, September 28, marks the start of the cross country season, with the Castlegar International Cross Country and TCS Lidingoloppet the first events in the World Athletics Cross Country series.

Next month, the two Gold Level events will take place in Amorebieta and Atapuerca, Spain, on October 20 and 27 respectively. Spain will host six of the fourteen gold level events scheduled for the season. Kenya will have two, the Great Chepsaita Cross Country and the Sirikwa Classic Cross Country, the final event in the series in February next year.

France is the other country to host more than one gold-level cross-country meet with the Cross International Le Maine Libre-Allonnes-Sarthe on November 17 and the Festival du Cross-Country on November 20-24.

The UK, Italy, USA and Belgium are the other countries hosting the rest of the gold level events.
