Hello friends and Happy Saturday from Robert Trent Jones Golf Club! It was a busy, fun-filled day here at the Solheim Cup and morale is high in Sunday’s singles matches.
I said it yesterday and I’ll say it again now: the spectator atmosphere at the Solheim Cup is unmatched. This is the kind of event you want to bring your family to. It’s where I would bring a friend if I had a day to turn him into a golf fan. The gallery is as supportive and positive as galleries get. I’ve seen young children exchange Solheim Cup friendship bracelets, adults exchange contact information in order to schedule a round of golf, and new friends share a soft pretzel while cheering on their favorite players. The kind of people you want to be surrounded by seem to be the ones going to the Solheim Cup.
Okay, on to Saturday’s action.
Solid moments on the first tap
of ship situation was resolved before day 2 of Solheim Cupwhich meant the first tee was batting for the opening strokes for both the alternate and four-ball matches today. Karsten Solheim’s son John filled the crowd when he started throwing merchandise into the stands, and Jessica Alba did the same a few hours later.
The fact that we’ve had a US President and a star from the critically acclaimed 2011 film Spy Kids appear in the first set of afternoon games the past two days really makes me wonder who will appear on Sunday. A TikTokker? A professional athlete from another sport? The options are endless and I await the discovery with bated breath.
Also, it turns out that Nelly Korda is as good a golfer as she gets. This video of her on the mic in the first game from the start of the afternoon games is so, so good.
Alison Lee’s hole has Tour players talking
Alison Lee’s eagle hole on No. 2 was incredible, though corpse celebrations it may be what people remember most.
Lee was doing it together with Megan Khang, and it turns out that the pros and their sympathizers made a deal about any potential holes. I’m shocked it happened so quickly.
Funny. Several PGA Tour players had fun with the moment on Twitter.
Joel Dahmen was immediately reminded of the time he and Harry Higgs did SOMETHING LOT similarly at the 2022 WM Phoenix Open.
Will this type of celebration be the next big thing in golf? Probably (definitely) not. But it’s funny to watch every now and then, and Kevin Kisner promised to do the same if Max Homa makes it to the Presidents Cup in Montreal later this month.
Kisner, is in writing. We will all hold you accountable.
And Max, the pressure to open at Royal Montreal Golf Club is mounting. We are all counting on you.
Junior Solheim Cup return photos
I am forever indebted to the US Junior Golf Association, who sent a bunch of old photos of members of the current Solheim Cup team from their days on the Junior Solheim Cup team.
Nelly Korda and Megan Khang always mention that they go way back, and these photos are pure gold.
Makes me wonder which members of the current Junior Solheim Cup team we’ll see in the bigs (well, bigger) phase in a few years.
