West Ham United were keen to sign former Manchester United striker Memphis Depay during the summer transfer window, but ultimately decided against a move, largely due to the lucrative contract of their current striker Danny Ings.
The Hammers had an eventful summer transfer window, with around €144m made in 14 new signings.
This included the likes of Wolves’ Max Kilman, Leeds’ Crysencio Summerville, Borussia Dortmund’s Niclas Füllkrug, Manchester United’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Palmeiras’ Luis Guilherme. The club also offloaded 14 players, generating approximately €44 million in sales.
Depay chase blocked by Danny Ings
According to a report by GiveMeSportWest Ham had shown a strong interest in Depay for much of the transfer window. However, the club’s plans to strengthen their attack with the Dutchman were put on hold due to Ings’ major contract at the London Stadium.
The report explains that Ings’ wages made it financially unviable for West Ham to pursue the lucrative Depay deal, leading the Netherlands international to eventually join Brazil’s Corinthians.
Inconsistent start under Lopetegui
West Ham have had an up-and-down start to the 2024/25 Premier League season under new manager Julen Lopetegui.
They have won one and lost two of their opening games, with their only win coming against Crystal Palace away from home. However, they suffered back-to-back defeats at home to Aston Villa and Manchester City.
As they prepare to face Fulham this weekend, the Hammers will be hoping to find more consistency and kick their campaign into gear.
