Six months ago, Berlanga was the main liner in a united Super Middleweight World title that took place in Las Vegas, Nevada. Unfortunately for Berlanga, he lost his unabashed record. Now he is ready to return by showing his talent on Saturday night.
The 27-year-old native of Brooklyn, New York, Edgar Berlanga, began his career impressively, while achieving 16 consecutive victories in the first round. In the course of his next five fights, Berlanga looked on average when he achieved five wins as a decision.
Berlanga would continue to do a drastic career movement while signing a multiple battle with Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing. A year later, the night of February 24, 2024, in his second fight with the match room, Berlanga ended his four -year drought when he faced the unbeaten Irish Boxer Padraig McCrory.
With 25 seconds left to go in the sixth round, Berlanga got a loop ear that sent McCrory to the canvas. McCrory tried to get up, but before he could struggle on his feet, his cornerman decided to throw in the towel.
After his victory victory, Berlanga landed his dream fight because he would face the Unified WBO, WBA, WBC super-middleweight world champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Canelo dropped Berlanga in the 3rd, but Berlanga was able to recover and survive the rest of the round.
Berlanga kept the fight competitive, but at the end of the 12-round competition, defending champion Canelo Alvarez won with unanimous decision. Now Edgar Berlanga (22-1, 17 CO’s) is ready to work back in the compulsory challenge of the challenger because he plans to tackle a tough unbeaten opponent.
A native of San Juan, Puerto Rico, Jonathan Gonzalez-Orthiz, is a pressure-style fighter who has a good punching and he is used to overwhelming his opponents with his work figure. The 35-year-old Gonzalez Orthiz had two fights in 2024, but before that was the last time he competed in the ring in 2014.
Gonzalez Orthiz’s ten-year dismissal and the low competition he faces are the two main reasons some are skeptical of this struggle. However, Edgar Berlanga does not underestimate his opponent because he believes he will be involved in a firefighting on Saturday night.
“I don’t look at this man, he’s coming to win,” Berlanga said. “He is Puerto Rikan, and he has that Puerto Rican blood in him. So I know he’s going to fight. I know he’s not going to run around to survive. He’s going to go there and try to prove a point. ‘
Austin “Ammo” Williams vs Patrice Volny is the capital letter, but the co-head is a very interesting match. Berlanga came off the big money fight with Canelo for his upcoming battle at 1.6 pounds over the 168 super-middleweight boundary.
If this is said, a lack of focus and discipline by Berlanga will open the doors of opportunities for a Gonzalez Orthiz, or will Berlanga show that he is on another level and achieves a routine victory?
