Rohit Sharma’s ‘naughty’ stump mic comments echoed by Jonty Rhodes


Former South African cricketer Jonty Rhodes has made some interesting revelations about Team India’s ODI and Test captain Rohit Sharma. Jonty Rhodes highlighted that Rohit Sharma always had a “naughty” side to his personality, adding that he often makes humorous comments on the field.

Rohit Sharma has always been known for his playful banter with teammates and reporters during press conferences. This side of his personality becomes more noticeable after becoming captain. Rohit’s humorous comments have hit the stump mics several times.

The 37-year-old batsman last appeared during the ODI series against Sri Lanka last month. He will miss the upcoming Duleep Trophy 2024 where many central contract players will compete. Rohit will be seen in action during the two-match Test series against Bangladesh.

Jonty Rhodes worked alongside Rohit for Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Rhodes stated that he did not fully understand Rohit’s naughty comments.

“The way he communicates with his teammates, he’s very characteristic. He’s pretty much a naughty boy. He says a few things on his stump mic and you go, “Oh! Do you know people are listening, Ro? I don’t understand all of it, but it’s always broadcast and translated for us,” Rhodes told Rev Sports.

The former South African cricketer praised Rohit Sharma for his relationship with the young players, describing him as a big brother. Rhodes highlighted that Rohit’s captaincy has been outstanding, adding that he has grown as a leader with Mumbai Indians.

“From a captaincy point of view, he’s been great. I was with him at MI for quite a few seasons. He’s grown as a captain there and that’s the best thing about him,” Rhodes said.

Jonty Rhodes also highlighted how Rohit Sharma has adapted his white-ball game to keep it effective. He added that adversaries are quick to spot weaknesses. Rhodes shared his experience of being dropped from Test cricket due to technical issues.

“Cricketers have to keep reinventing themselves. You’re easily recognized internationally. I was banned from Test cricket for two years because I had a technical problem. If you look at Rohit, there’s been so much cricket that if you don’t, ‘If you don’t improve, people will understand you,'” he said.

Rhodes is considered one of the best in the history of cricket. The former cricketer played 52 Tests and 245 ODIs for South Africa between 1992 and 2003. Rhodes scored 2,532 runs in Test cricket and 5,935 runs in ODIs. He smashed three centuries in Test cricket and two centuries in ODI matches.
