4 things we learned about Liverpool in August

Despite not doing much business during the summer of 2024 transfer window, the Arne Slot era at Liverpool is off to a strong start.

With three wins from three games and zero goals conceded, the Reds have been truly fantastic so far, with his statement won Manchester United at Old Trafford the highlight of a very positive month for the club.

Here are the four biggest takeaways from Liverpool’s performance in August.

There are two teams that have won all three Premier League matches so far this season.

Obviously, one is Manchester City and the other Liverpool.

The Reds have also done impressively, beating Ipswich Town, Brentford and Manchester United without conceding a single goal.

It’s early days, sure, but they look like genuine title contenders once again this season.

This good form has been largely down to the tactical brilliance of new manager Arne Slot.

The former Feyenoord manager has got the Reds fans on board early in his tenure thanks to his ability to make the most of his attacking options while keeping the team solid defensively.

He has done so using an expansive and malleable 4-2-3-1 formation, which has been tweaked slightly from match to match to exploit the opposition’s weaknesses. This was seen when Slot pushed his full-backs high up the flanks to expose Man Utd’s defensive frailties.

Luis Diaz

After watching Cody Gakpo absolutely tear it up at Euro 2024, many expected the Dutch striker to make the left wing spot his own at Liverpool under Slot.

Surprisingly, this has not been the case.

Instead, Slot has relied on Luis Diaz to play at left back, and so far he’s proven to be a master stroke.

The Colombian has been outstanding in Liverpool’s first three games of the season, pressing hard on the ball and providing quality when he’s played too, with four assists so far.

If Diaz continues this form, it’s hard to imagine Gakpo ever seeing under Slot.

Mohamed Salah

After a huge fall out with Jurgen Klopp and patchy form at the end of the 2023/24 season, Mohamed Salah’s Liverpool career looked set to end.

Three weeks into the 2024/25 campaign, this dip and slump in form is a distant, distant memory.

salah he’s been back to his best in recent weeks, scoring a pretty impressive three goals and three assists in August alone.

There are very, very few players better than the Egyptian star when he’s in this kind of form.
