David Benavidez (30-0, 24 CO’s) boasted a beaten appearance to the media that he “beaten” harder than David Morrell (11-1, 9 COs) after giving him a unanimous decision of 12 round ” A battle defeated much closer than the scores by the judges of Nevada on Saturday night.
The relatively unmarked Morrell is definitely louder than benavidez. It was a close struggle that could have been a draw, but the judges gave it to ‘the Mexican monster’ by the scores 115-111, 115-111 and 118-108.
The referee interrupted Morrell’s momentum when he punished him for beating the bell to end the 11th round. Morrell injured benavidez and tried to complete him. We will never know what would have happened, but the timing of that point was bad.
Benavidez fought like he always does, throwing a lot of blows and using his work rate as his defense to produce his opponent. The Cuban Morrell was more focused on hard shots than benavidez’s scattered approach.
After the fight, Banavidez said he wanted the Artur Betterbiev to come to the US against Dmitry Biblical winner to defend against him. It is unclear whether he expects this to happen. It would be surprising if it happened. Benavidez should have an ego problem if he really thinks that the Betterbiev-bivol 2-match winner would be voluntary to fight him in the US
