Former India opener Akash Chopra He recently shared a list of the top seven yorker bowlers, mentioning some of the most famous names in cricket history. On it YouTube Channel, Chopra praised the unique skills of these bowlers who have made the yorker their signature delivery.
Master of Yorks
Chopra started with the Sri Lankan legend Lasith Malingafamous for his deadly yorkers. He praised Malinga’s ability to bowl yorkers with a lower trajectory and his innovative use of slower yorkers. Malinga’s distinctive bowling style and accuracy have made him an outstanding performer in modern cricket.
“You can’t get away from him in modern cricket. You can’t look at anyone but him. Coached the yorkers by keeping the shoes famous – Lasith Malinga. Lasith Malinga was an absolute beast. His yorkers were different because they came with a lower trajectory. He was a genius. He also had a slower yorker.” Chopra said.
Legendary Pakistani duo
Chopra also highlighted the influence of Pakistan’s elders Vaghar Yunis and Wasim Akram. With his light round arm movement and devastating yorkers, he was described by Chopra as a bowler with mesmerizing rhythm. Meanwhile, Akram, known for his versatility and ability to change angles, was celebrated for his complete bowling prowess. Chopra noted that Akram’s ability to regulate his movement increased his effectiveness with the yorker.
“Then I remember someone running from afar. He also had a little round arm movement. It was fun just watching him run. Sometimes with the new ball, but with the old ball it was absolutely lethal. The name of the bowler is Vagar Younis. His rhythm was worth watching. After that I think about Wasim bhai. He is from two Vs – Waqar and Wasim, and Wasim was different. He used to change angles a lot at first, playing around and around the stumps with a little round arm movement or high movement as per his will. Wasim Akram was the complete bowler that I used to watch.” he added.

Masters of modern times
Addressing the current players, Chopra praised the Indian pacers jasprit bumrah and Muhammad Shami. To Bumrah’s yorker Ollie Pope highlighted as a clear example of his exceptional ability. Chopra described Bumrah’s yorkers as “bullet-like” and impressive. Shami, on the other hand, has been recognized for his impressive debut performance against the West Indies and his ability to deliver accurate yorkers at crucial moments, including a spell against South Africa in Vizag.
“This brings me to the genius of the white ball and the red ball. He’s also a total beast. He is our pride – Boom Boom Bumrah. What a bowler. A yorker with Ollie Pope, you can keep watching it on loop. Ollie Pope had no hope. The ball went in like a bullet and hit the stumps. He has bowled so many yorkers. I also remember Mohammad Shami. He is very bright. If you can look at his debut, it was against the West Indies at the Eden Gardens, he took five wickets, the yorkers were hitting the stumps. I think he scored five in the second innings against South Africa on the fifth day in Vizag. He also bowled with excellent yorkers there.” Chopra explained.
Other notable notes
Chopra concluded her list by mentioning Andrew Flintoff and Dwayne Bravo. Flintoff’s yorkers were noted for their effectiveness with reverse swing, particularly during the 2005 Ashes series. Bravo’s versatility in white-ball cricket, including his deft use of slow yorkers and his ability to go around the stumps, earned him a place on Chopra’s list.
“There will be small discussions after that. There may be personal preferences. I’m just mentioning some names. I used to like Andrew Flintoff’s yorkers a lot, especially in the 2005 Ashes where the ball swung a lot. He had a slightly different open body, high arm movement, but he was very quick in the air. Dwayne Bravo – he batted a lot in white ball cricket, on and around the stumps. Very few right-arm bowlers have gone around the stumps, but he has. He has also dealt with very slow yorkers. It wasn’t at the same pace, but it was very, very effective. Chopra added.
