What started as a 12-team golf simulator competition for a $150,000 grand prize is now a four-team battle to the finish.
The first eight matches have been completed on the GOLFZON Tour – a new league in which regional teams of five players each from 12 selected GOLFZON host facilities (nine are in the US, the others are from London, Toronto and Mexico) compete against each other – to the other. in a series of games, with one team winning the grand prize.
Team Orlando defeated Team Louisville in match 1, while Team Minneapolis defeated Team Chicago in match 2. Team London fell to Team New York in Game 3AND Team Houston defeated Team Mexico in Game 4. Game 5 featured another international battle, pitting Team Canada against Team Orlando in the first leg of the quarterfinals. Team Orlando won in a sudden-death playoff to advance to the semifinal round. In the 6th game, Team Tulsa defeated Team Houston to become the second team to reach the semi-finals, and in Game 7, The Detroit team was victorious over the New York team.
With the last semifinal spot up for grabs, Team Los Angeles faced Team Minneapolis.
format
Single-elimination bracket play is currently underway. Teams of three compete head-to-head by connecting their simulators together online in a match format, with two of the three best scores for each team counting on each hole. Female competitors play 85 percent of the court of their male counterparts.
If, after 18 holes, there is a tie, the match goes into a sudden death playoff where all three players’ scores count. The first team to score less than the other on a hole wins.
GOLFZON Tournament Match 8 Recap: Team Los Angeles vs. Team Minneapolis
In the last GOLFZON Tour quarterfinal match, Team Los Angeles and Team Minneapolis played each other in an international favorite: Kingsbarns Golf Links in Scotland, a long-time DP World Tour’s host course Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. Teams competed against each other in real time from their regional simulator locations.
Team Los Angeles was one of four teams to earn a first-round bye during qualifying, while Team Minneapolis already had a head-to-head win on their resume after defeating Team Chicago in Game 2.
The Los Angeles team got on the board first with a win on the first hole. Minneapolis fought back with a victory in the 2nd to square the game back. The teams tied the 3rd hole, with the Los Angeles team regaining the advantage with wins on the 4th and 5th holes. Minneapolis then got one back on the 6th to cut the deficit back to 1. The teams tied the 7th hole, then Team Los Angeles won the 8th and 9th holes to go 3 up at the turn .
That meant Team Minneapolis had a sizeable deficit to clean up and just nine holes to do it. And unfortunately, the hole they were in only deepened, as Team Los Angeles won the 10th hole to go 4 up. Minneapolis battled back with a win in the 11th to get back to 3 down. The 12th hole proved to be decisive as Team Los Angeles won to get back to 4 up, and then they also won the 13th hole to go 5 up. That meant Minneapolis would have to win five straight holes just to go into sudden death.
In the end, Team Los Angeles – and their clutch placement – proved too much to overcome. A tie at the 14th hole meant the match was over, with Team Los Angeles claiming a 5-and-4 victory over Minneapolis to punch their ticket to the semi-finals. Los Angeles is now one of only four teams still in contention for the $150,000 grand prize and will face Team Tulsa in the semi-final round of the GOLFZON Tour.
