Cardiff City, Everton and Fulham kicked off the third round of the FA Cup, all winning their matches on Thursday night. Aston Villa ran out winners in a Premier League battle the following night, toppling West Ham United in Graham Potter’s first game in charge of the Irons.
Liverpool, who last won the competition in 2021/22, advanced to the fourth round with their 4-0 win against Accrington Stanley in League Two. Trent Alexander-Arnold starred after a difficult week for the right-back and Federico Chiesa scored his first goal for the club.
Chelsea secured an equally high-profile win over League Two opposition. beating Morecambe 5-0 at Stamford Bridge. Doubles from Tosin Adarabioyo and Joao Felix secured an emphatic victory, and the Blues will join Bournemouth, Leicester City, Brighton & Hove Albion and Nottingham Forest in the fourth round.
The biggest surprise of Saturday’s FA Cup games was Plymouth Argyle’s 1-0 win at Brentford. Morgan Whittaker scored the winner in the final game for the Pilgrims before Miron Muslic took over for the recently sacked Wayne Rooney.
