What to make of Max Homa’s debut at Cobra Golf

It was a season of change for Max Homa, who showed up to his first PGA Tour event in Kapalua with a new swing coach (John Scott Rattan), new clothes (lululemon), a complementary box and – perhaps most importantly – new golf clubs.

Starting the new year, Homa signed a multi-year agreement with Cobra Puma Golf to play the company’s clubs and wear Puma golf shoes. It was arguably the loudest announcement of any equipment change by any player this offseason, especially considering Homa had been playing Titleist dating back to his amateur days.

Homa finished at 19 last week at Sentry, which was only good for a T26 finish at the Kapalua Bird Festival. But on this week’s episode of GOLF’s Fully Equipped, co-hosts Kris McCormack and Wadeh Maroun both think there was a lot to like about the way Homa played into the new year.

“You have to be excited about the fact that you played really, really well,” Maroun said of Homa’s week. “You can trust the irons you’ve tested and the woods you’ve tested. I think he put the wedges in the game as well.”

The only holdovers from last year’s bag from Homa include his prototype Scotty Cameron T5.5 hammer and Titleist Pro V1x golf ball. The Cobra clubs in his bag include the company’s new ones DS-ADAPT LS drivers and a set of prototype 3D printed irons.

He also immediately became the face of the Cobra’s Tour staff with Rickie Fowler and Gary Woodland likely out of their prime while Lexi Thompson is retiring from regular LPGA competition.

“Cobra needs somebody to come out and do something really, really good for them, too,” Maroun said. “They’ve had a really nice story over the last few years, but they just haven’t had the professional presence to put it into gear after losing Bryson (DeChambeau).

Added McCormack: “Having Max on staff now, there’s a new player who takes the social media component, mixing it with people, has the personality and I think yes, a great addition.”
