Noah Lyles took the win, but the pair both clocked 9.79 in the French capital.
Last season, Thompson recorded the fastest time in the world. he clocked 9.77 in Jamaica’s Olympic Trials win, and is now 9th on the all-time 10-hour list.
The only men who have gone faster than him over the distance are: Usain Bolt, Johan Blake, Tyson Gay, Asafa Powell, Justin Gatlin, Christian Coleman, Trayvon Bromell and Fred Curley.
Thompson hasn’t competed since the Olympics, so it will be interesting to see how his winter training goes and what form he is in for the 2025 season.
His main competition in Astana will be Andre De Grasse, who became the 200m Olympic champion in Tokyo and was part of Canada’s 4x100m team that won gold in Paris.
Many other Jamaicans will compete in Kazakhstan, from Tia and Tina Clayton to Natasha Morrison and Janiev Russell.
