Tiger Woods’ former guru helping a young pro. And the results? ‘Really nice’

Harry Hall says he looked at the wall and the screen floored him. There were 20 to 25 flags, he thinks. All represented major championship victories won under his watch.

of course Butch Harmon’s The swing lab in Las Vegas also wowed him, he said last year on a podcast, when he recalled the player who used to swing where he’s swinging now.

Harmon can certainly stun a player, although his appeal is justified, as the wall and Forests can testify. Which is apparently one reason why Halla 27-year-old pro from England who said he had previously only had a few pieces of instruction called one of the game’s biggest whisperers and a GOLF Magazine’s Top 100 Famous Teachers. It couldn’t be hurt. Harmon took him inside. And from there? This is also impressive. Since last June, when he said he first visited, Hall has:

— Won for the first time on the PGA Tour in mid-July at the ISCO Championship

– Only missed one cut in 11 starts

— Posted seven top 25s, including last week in the season opener sentry event

“I started working on it,” Hall said, “and I’ve been playing really nice ever since.”

On Thursday, the beauty continued as he shot a six-under 64 to grab a share of the first-round lead at Sony Open. Afterwards, he pointed to his balls – “they got him right where I was looking today” – and reporters wondered if the effort was out of the ordinary. “No,” Hall said with a laugh. He explained that a new driver helped.

Harmon too. Hall, who played college golf at Nevada-Las Vegas, said he has shown that he has more width in his swing, along with staying with just one draw shot. However, there is more to Harmon’s genius. He’s a character, he told Matt Chivers last year on an episode of the NCG Golf Podcast (which you can listen to in full by clicking here.)

“It’s amazing,” Hall said on the podcast. “He lives in Vegas. He has his school there. Just hitting the same tee as Tiger Woods and you have, you look back, how many majors are on the wall from his players. It may have 20 or 25 flags. Hopefully, I can put a few more up there.

“It’s just the stories he has. Most of the teaching is swing work, and most of it is telling jokes and funny stories that cannot be repeated. So it’s good. There’s definitely something about him that’s calming and he probably has a lot of success seeing players once or twice. He’s just a good guy to be around.”

— Shots Earned: Total: 94 in 2022-’23 to 37 in 2024

– Strokes Gained: Tee to Green: 166 to 60

– Strokes gained off the tee: from 173 to 139

– Strokes gained close to the green: from 163 to 77

– Strokes gained around the green: from 53 to the sixth

“I’ve never had a coach before,” Hall said, talking about the connection with Harmon. “… I had some growth, but not in the last 10 years.

“I felt this was what I needed to do to get to the next level.”
