Devin Haney will train in front of his British fans in an open practice today at 2:00 PM in London, England. He has not scheduled a fight.
Haney in London: Search UK Boost
It’s a strange move by Dev because he’s not fighting a British guy; he is coming off an embarrassing loss, and his stock is low. He seems desperate to make this move, but it shows where he is doing career-wise.
It will look bad for Haney if few fans and members of the media show up to watch him practice. However, there will probably be a fair amount of British media that will turn up so they can be interviewed.
Some believe this move is to build Haney’s brand overseas in hopes of being selected by Turki Al-Shiekh to fight on one of his Riyadh season cards. By training in London, former two-division world champion Devin will gain exposure from the British press and possibly be spotted by Turki.
If he wants to add Devin to one of his cards, he could match him up against a formidable opponent like Richardson Hitchins, Liam Paro, or Jaron Ennis. It’s doubtful that Haney will agree to fight either of those guys because he doesn’t want to jeopardize his rematch with Ryan Garcia.
Losing Haney’s A-list status
In the US, Haney’s stock has fallen from the combination of his loss to Ryan Garcia and his decision to start a lawsuit and sit out of the ring for a year and not fight. The way his career looks right now, it doesn’t look good for him.
Because of this loss, he is no longer one of the A-list fighters, and his chances of returning to his former place of high status are slim. There isn’t a weak champion like the one Haney beat to win his two-division world titles.
