Renewed Champions League format
This season, the Champions League has undergone a major revamp, moving away from the traditional format of 32 teams divided into eight groups of four. Instead, a single table of 36 teams, called the “League stage”, has been introduced.
Key format changes
Unique league table: All 36 teams are now in a single table. Each club will play eight different opponents, four at home and four away, instead of facing three opponents twice in a group stage.
Planting and drawing process: Teams were drawn into four seeding pots, with each club drawn to play two opponents from each pot, one at home and one away.
Classification for the knockout rounds:
- The top eight teams in the league stage will automatically advance to the round of 16.
- Teams ranked 9th to 24th will compete in a two-legged playoff round for the remaining spots in the Round of 16.
- Teams finishing 25th or below will be eliminated from European competition entirely, without transfer to the Europa League.
Knockout Rounds: From the round of 16, the competition will continue with the traditional elimination rounds.
