Sanjiv Goenka, the Lucknow Super Giants owner made a big revelation about the future of Aussie legend Justin Langer with the franchise as head coach.
Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have appointed former Australian player Justin Langer as their head coach after IPL 2023. They did not renew Andy Flower’s contract and decided to aim for a step up after finishing behind Langer in the top 4. -back-to-back seasons.
However, it didn’t turn out well for the franchise as they missed out on a playoff berth for the first time. In the Indian Premier League 2024, Lucknow Super Giants finished seventh in the table and played really poor cricket.
After the team’s disappointing season, Justin Langer was rumored to be fired after one season. And now Sanjiv Goenka has broken his silence on this matter
Speaking to the media, Goenka said Langer will continue in the role along with assistant coach Lance Klusener and fielding coach Jonty Rhodes.
“You don’t know what’s going on. Of course, coach (Justin Langer) is moving on, so is Lance Klusener (assistant coach) and Jonty Rhodes (pitch coach).
“We are happy for Morne Morkel and Gautam Gambhir, we are very happy that they have joined the national team,” Goenka was quoted as saying by India Today.
Justin Langer to join Zaheer Khan in IPL 2025
Justin Langer will have a new addition to his support staff in IPL 2025 as legendary Indian pacer Zaheer Khan has been appointed as the side’s new mentor. The mentor position was vacant as Gautam Gambhir left for Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024.
Notably, Zaheer will have a wider profile at Lucknow Super Giants as he will work on the scouting and talent development program in addition to his mentoring role.
Speaking about Zaheer joining Lucknow Super Giants, passionate LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka said he was very impressed with Zaheer as a player and coach. Citing Zaheer’s hunger for success as the reason for his appointment, Goenka said he decided to approach the Indian great as soon as he realized that Zaheer had no IPL gig on his table.
“The beginning of a new relationship. Zaheer has impressed me as a player, coach and strategist,” Goenka said. “His hunger for success is what attracted me to bring him to the LSG franchise.
“A couple of weeks ago I realized he was not in any cricket franchise. I called him. We talked. He agreed. And here he is. He is short and quick. We are very excited to have him on board.”
Meanwhile, during the same media interaction, Sanjiv Goenka remained firm on the team and captain KL Rahul moving forward.
He further tagged the batter as an integral part of the Lucknow Super Giants family but did not reveal whether the batter will be retained or released ahead of the Indian Premier League 2025 mega auction.
